Just about everyone knows wool rugs are better than just about any other rug fiber. But do you know why?

First of all, let’s briefly look at this from a manufacturing point of view to see why manufacturers prefer wool. Wool is very absorbent and allows for excellent dye penetration with good uniformity and deep color penetration into the medulla (hollow core of wool fiber) without the use of chemicals. Since wool dyes well it offers many opportunities to the manufacturer for a variety of colors.

From the consumers point of view because of the absorbency characteristic and moisture wool naturally has, wool is self-extinguishing. Wool is hard to burn! Unlike most fibers that easily ignite, wool doesn’t burn well, instead wool chars and stops burning when the source of fire is removed. For this exact reason, wool is used for airplane carpet where a safer fiber is desired. Additionally wool is a good insulator and is a warmer fiber than other options.

But perhaps the best reason wool is such an outstanding choice for rugs is its natural ability to be resilient. Wool’s natural coil spring has the capability of stretching as much as 50% and bounces back to its original shape when released. Wool also has the natural ability to be bent back on itself 20,000 times whereas cotton is 3000 times and silk only 2000 times. What does this mean to you? A properly cared for rug (good vacuuming habits and routine professional cleaning) will outperform all other fibers. You’ll appreciate that wool stays nice looking much longer than alternative fibers which “ugly out” much sooner with flattened out traffic patterns.
