When Do Light-Colored Area Rugs Make Sense in Your Home? – Prescott Valley AZ

Hi folks!  Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here and something I see ALL THE TIME in magazines and catalogues is beautifully furnished rooms with a gorgeous, light-colored area rug as the center piece.  It seems like a great idea at first because it ties everything together and really gives the whole room a great look.

However, having a light-colored area rug as the centerpiece to your home may not be the best idea, depending on where in your home the rug is located.

Guest bedrooms and other rooms that don’t see a lot of heavy traffic are great places for light-colored area rugs.  Unlike rugs that have busy patterns and deeper colors, lighter area rugs show the soiling more.  It’s not that they attract more soil than their darker-colored counterparts, but the light colors don’t make it easy to hide soil.  This can be a problem when the rug is in your family room and sees a lot of traffic.

Area rugs are filters for our homes and they collect everything from the dry soil on our shoes to dust and other microscopic allergens.  Pet accidents can also happen on area rugs, which can be another problem for light-colored area rugs.  Urine stains can not only be an eyesore, but they can also be permanent.  If your furry friend tends to have accidents in the home, you may want to re-think that light area rug.
