There is the general knowledge that wool fiber area rugs are better than most every other fiber, but why is that? I’m Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care and today I thought I would share some simple facts that support why wool is just better.
From the point of view of the manufacturer, wool dyes very well since it is a very absorbent fiber. Because of this absorbency, wool allows for excellent dye penetration into the medulla (the hollow core of wool fibers) with both good uniformity and deep color without the use of chemicals. This allows manufacturers to utilize a variety of colors in the production of their rugs.
Did you know that wool is used for carpet on airplanes? This is because it is a safer fiber than others because it is very hard to burn. Due to the absorbency characteristics and moisture that wool naturally has, wool is self-extinguishing. Instead of burning or easily igniting like other fibers, wool chars and stops burning once the source of fire has been removed. Not only that, but wool is also a great insulator and a warmer fiber than other options available.
The third, and perhaps the best, reason wool is such a great choice for rugs, is that wool is naturally resilient. Wool’s natural coil spring has the capability of stretching as much as 50% and still bouncing back to its original shape when released. This makes wool fibers extremely sturdy as compared to alternative fibers. Studies show that you can also bend wool back on itself 20,000 times, whereas you can only do that to cotton 3000 times and silk a mere 2000 times. This is why a properly cared for wool area rug (good vacuuming habits and routine professional cleanings included) will outperform every other fiber. Not only that, but wool stays looking nice much longer than other fibers that tend to flatten out with traffic patterns and thus “ugly out” sooner.
