What You Need to Know About Handling Water-Damaged Area Rugs – Prescott Valley AZ
Ruthie here with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott AZ and I’m going to get straight to the point – Time is the enemy when it comes to area rugs involved in water damages. The longer that a rug remains wet, the more likely it is that permanent damage will occur.
When a rug remains wet for extended periods of time, they may suffer from:
- Dry rot
- Dye bleed
- Discoloration and turning brown-ish in color.
- Mold and mildew growth
- And if the rug is tufted (with a piece of fabric glued to the back of the rug), the risk of delamination skyrockets.
All of these things may or may not be correctable.
A homeowner’s #1 concern should always be bacteria! How did the rug get wet? Water from a toilet leak may very likely have high levels of bacteria that needs to be treated as soon as possible. Even if the water looks clean, bacteria is always a concern.

We’ll arrive at your home, extract the standing water from the rug (if it’s still wet), then wrap the rug in a temporary plastic for transport back to our rug facility. Once your rug is here, we will immediately begin the disinfecting and drying procedures.
