What You NEED TO KNOW About Using Powdered Deodorizers on Your Area Rugs – Prescott AZ

What You NEED TO KNOW About Using Powdered Deodorizers on Your Area Rugs – Prescott AZ

It’s no secret that companies spend a LOT of money on advertising to convince consumers that their product to solve a particular problem.  Scented powders you sprinkle on your area rugs are no different.  According to the advertisements, all you have to do is sprinkle this product on your rug and VOILA!  No more puppy pee and your rug has never smelled better!  The truth is that this is only temporary and soon that scent will be a combination of too-sweet flowers and urine mixed together.

Here at Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care, we’ve pretty much seen it all.  Here’s the real truth about powdered deodorizers: They do nothing to remove the source of the smell!  Typically a rug owner’s goal is to hide urine odors.  However, you can only expect these to mask those odors for a short time - just like underarm deodorant doesn’t correct body odor.  The same goes for area rugs – the source of the odor MUST BE REMOVED with a thorough cleaning to be able to correct the problem.

Urine salt crystals are very damaging to wool, silk, and synthetic area rug fibers.  Leaving these salt crystals to go unattended in your rug can lead to dry rot that can do some pretty devastating damage to your rug fibers.  Splits, tears, and holes are all possibilities when it comes to dry rot in rug fibers.

Also keep in mind that these powdered deodorizers do nothing to decontaminate your rug!  When the source of the odor remains (be it urine, fecal, vomit, etc.), that bacteria still remains in those area rug fibers.

Some people can tend to get a little overzealous with the powdered deodorizers.  At Arizona Oriental, we’ve seen fine Persian and Oriental rugs that have a very heavy build-up of this smelly powder.  It’s been so over-used that it becomes extremely compacted deep down into the knots of the rug itself.  When this kind of severe situation happens, it becomes very difficult to fully remove the deodorizing powder from the knots of the rug.

You should never mask a problem.  Give Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care a call instead!  We will assist you in correcting the problem.  Our deep-cleaning process removes all urine salt crystals and odors, allowing you to enjoy your rug to the fullest.

Till next time, enjoy your beautiful art for your floors and remember a clean rug is a rug that can last you a lifetime!
