What No One Told You About Soil Protectant and Your Area Rugs – Prescott AZ

I’m Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care and along with providing professional, thorough cleaning of area rugs for folks here in Northern Arizona, we always want to help our clients preserve their area rugs for the years to come.  I wanted to take a moment today to talk about one of the services that Arizona Oriental offers to help preserve area rugs – soil protection!

I’ve talked before about how abrasive and damaging dry soil is to our area rugs and how it acts just like sand paper.  When dry soil is allowed to build up at the base of rug fibers, it grinds away at delicate wool and silk fibers which can lead to total disaster. Just as the name implies, soil protectant helps your fibers resist soiling!

I like to say that soil protectant is much like the wax on the paint on our cars.  Wax prevents the dirt and dust of the world from chipping away at our car’s paint and doing damage.  Soil protectant does the same thing and helps protect your rug fibers from the dry soil that gets left on your rug.

What are the benefits of applying soil protectant to your area rugs?

1. If something spills on your rug, you have a little more reaction time.  It isn’t like soil protectant is bulletproof or anything, though.  You should ALWAYS blot up spills as quickly as possible to prevent permanent staining.  However, soil protectant does allow you a little more time to grab a stack of paper towels or cotton cloths to blot the spill up.
2. Your rug fibers will stay cleaner longer.  Soil protectant helps your rug resist soiling and with regular vacuuming, your fibers will appear nice and clean longer than non-protected fibers.  This translates into needing to have your area rug professionally cleaned a little less often!
3. Improves vacuuming & makes professional cleaning easier next time!  Soil releases from rug fibers more easily when the fibers have been protected.  It also helps to keep dry soil from working its way down in between the fibers, allowing your vacuum to pick up more dry soil.
