I wanted to take today to discuss a little about some of the designs you may find in your area rugs! Many of these designs have specific meaning to the weaver who designed the rug - especially the little animal motifs. Rugs often share a story from the weaver’s heritage that’s been passed down to them through the generations.
More often than not, animal motifs and symbols convey positive emotions. After all, an unlucky rug probably wouldn’t be too popular with the consumer, would it? By understanding these designs, we can gain a higher appreciation for the weaver’s intentions when they were designing the rug.
Deer are popular in area rugs and symbolize well-being. Camels represent wealth, which likely has to do with the Silk Road and the use of camels in trading caravans! Lions convey victory and horses represent speed. To convey abundance, you could use a fish. Elephants mean power! My personal favorite is the phoenix, which represents and symbolizes an empress.
