Water Damaged Area Rugs?  Here’s What You Need to Do…

Ruthie here with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott AZ.  I know that we have been getting quite a bit of rain the last week, which is wonderful!  I love monsoon season because it’s beautiful and we always need the rain, especially this time around!  However, sometimes monsoon season can bring about unexpected problems, as well, especially when it comes to water damages in your home.  Nothing is more dangerous to a rug than a water damage!

Remember: time is of the essence when it comes to water-damaged area rugs!

The longer that a rug stays wet, the more likely it is that permanent damage will occur.  Here are just a few things that can happen when an area rug suffers a water damage, all of which may or may not be correctable:

• Dry rot of the fibers, which leads to cuts, holes, tears, and fiber shredding

• Dye migration

• Mold & mildew growth

• Discoloration with the rug turning a brown color

• The risk of delamination for tufted area rugs (which have fabric glued to the back of them) skyrockets.

Bacteria should ALWAYS be your #1 concern! It’s important to note how the rug got wet.  For example, a toilet leak may have looked like clean water but it likely has high levels of bacteria that need to be treated as soon as possible.

Here at Arizona Oriental, we have the tools and materials necessary to properly treat and clean area rugs that have suffered a water damage.  If your rug is still wet when we arrive at your home, we will extract the standing water as much as possible from the rug before we roll it up.  We will store your rug in a temporary plastic to get it back to our shop, where we will then immediately begin disinfecting and drying procedures.
