There are many types of rugs. The finer rugs are hand knotted and can last many generations. There is another type of rug that mimics a hand knotted rug, however it actually is manufactured by pushing tufts of wool fibers through a cloth (cloth is the base) and then a layer of glue is applied to hold all these loose wool tufts in place. A finished look is obtained by gluing a piece of monkscloth to the back.  This style of manufacturing is called a tufted rug.

Because glue dries and begins to breaks down in about 10 years a tufted rug will need repair once this deterioration happens. Here are photos showing a tufted rug that not only has dry glue, but was stored improperly all bunched up and now the rug will not lay flat correctly on the floor.

SOLUTION:  Remove the old backing, scrape off the dried up glue, reapply fresh glue and apply a fresh, clean piece of cloth.
