Tip of the Day – What a Moth’s 3 Favorite Things about Your Area Rugs Are – Prescott Valley AZ

Here at Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care, rugs come into us all day long for cleaning.  Some of the rugs that come into us have signs that moths have damaged the fibers.  Typically, moths munch on the wool fibers and leave holes in rugs anywhere from ¼ inch to massive holes 12 to 24 inches if the infestation is left undetected for a period of time.

I’m Ruthie and today I thought I would to present you a little information about what it is that moths (and their larvae) love so much about your area rugs so you can protect your rugs from a possible moth infestation like the one pictured here.

#1 – MOTHS LOVE WOOL!  But there is a moth treatment that can be applied to rugs that acts as a repellant.  This treatment makes the wool unappealing to moths and their larvae and they will look elsewhere when choosing their next meal.  This treatment can be applied to your rugs here at Arizona Oriental.  There isn’t any odor or visible evidence it has been applied, but the moths will definitely get the memo.

#2 – HEAVILY SOILED RUGS, especially ones with animal urine deposits, are basically an all you can eat buffet full of the richest delicacies for moths.  You might not think so, but urine is very attractive to moths due to the proteins in it.  Tasty, right?  So you would be wise to NEVER store dirty rugs. 

#3 – QUIET, UNDISTURBED AREAS OF YOUR HOME are heaven to moths.  We at Arizona Oriental know that rugs left in quiet rooms, closets, or storage areas like the garage or attic or under beds for extended periods of time are far more likely to have moth damage than rugs in the active areas of your home.  Why?  Because moths don’t like us any more than we like them.  Dark and quiet spots allow them to go undetected, which is what they want most.
