Tip of the Day: What You Can Do to Sell Your Area Rug!
Ruthie here with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott, AZ and I have to say that it’s certainly not uncommon to receive a phone call from someone wanting to know if we buy used area rugs. Unfortunately for those callers, we only specialize in cleaning and repairs of area rugs, not buying or selling!
High quality Persian and Oriental rugs can last for many, many generations - which can be good or bad news. It’s great to be able to have a family heirloom for 20, 30, or even 75 to 100 years! But after all those years, the rug may not fit the lifestyle of the current owner. Maybe the colors and design no longer work in the home or it’s just too big for a smaller home.
Once you’ve made the decision to part with the rug, my first suggestion is to have your rug professionally cleaned. The colors will pop and be brilliant again instead of being covered up by years of built-up soil. Trust me, no one wants to buy someone else’s dirt, and a clean rug will just show better! If there are animal urine spots on the rug, then it DEFINITELY needs to be cleaned before selling it!
I also don’t recommend trying to sell your rug yourself. The world is crazy these days and inviting strangers into your home isn’t always the best idea. Rugs are also highly personal. If the pattern, color, size, or fringe aren’t exactly what the buyer is looking for, they’ll likely just waste your precious time with looking at it only to say “it’s not quite right.”
I always suggest to those of my clients trying to sell their rugs that they get in touch with a quality consignment store and let them do the work for you. Consignment stores see many people who go ‘treasure hunting,’ so that means the right buyer will eventually come along and fall in love with your rug! Plus, you won’t have to worry about doing all that work yourself!
Here in Prescott, I like to refer Batterman’s and Three Sisters to those clients. I know there are far more productive and enjoyable things you would rather be doing with your time than trying to sell an old area rug you don’t want anymore! Life’s short, so make the most of it!
