Tip of the Day – Beware Overly-Aggressive Plant Watering Around Your Rugs! – Prescott Valley AZ
Almost everyone enjoys having live plants in their homes for both the beauty and lovely nature appeal that live plants add to your home. But rug owners should take heed! Overwatering potted plants and flooding water onto your area rug fibers is one of the worst accidents that can happen to your area rugs and will likely cause permanent fiber damage. Not only will this stain the fibers, but you also run the very real risk of causing dry rot to the fibers. Dry rot describes brown rot decay caused by fungi that deteriorate rug fibers (more often the cotton foundation) of area rugs.
This is why Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott AZ warns everyone to take precautions to prevent water overflow from coming in contact with your area rugs. Plants should have some kind of a plastic or water proof container beneath your plant to capture any potential water overflow. You should check these waterproof containers frequently to make sure they aren’t cracked or leaking. Dry rot happens over time when a leak is ignored and undetected.
Also be extra careful to not over water your house plants. This includes reminding your over-ambitious spouse, the house sitter, and the cleaning service to never over water your plants.
Water itself is not only damaging, but there’s the added minerals from the soil that is also extremely damaging. These minerals will very likely cause permanent staining to your rug fibers. It’s pretty clear that there really is no good outcome from overwatering your potted plants. Prevention is always a better solution than trying to “fix” permanent damage.
