Tip of the Day – 3 Things Moths Love about Your Area Rugs – Prescott AZ  

At Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care we see rugs come in all day long for cleaning and with some of them are signs that moths have damaged the fibers. It’s usually the wool fibers that moths will munch on, leaving holes in rugs from as little as a ¼ inch to massive holes 12 to 24 inches if the infestation is undetected for a long period of time. Attached is a photo of just such an unfortunate moth infestation. 

I’m Ruthie and I’m presenting a little information so that you learn what it is the moths (and their larvae) so you’ll be able to protect your rugs from a possible moth infestation.

#1 – Moths love wool. Did you know that there is a moth treatment that can be applied to rugs that acts as a repellant? This makes the wool unappealing to moths and moth larvae and they’ll look elsewhere when choosing their next meal. Here at Arizona Oriental we can apply this treatment to your rugs. There is no odor or visible evidence that it has been applied, but the moths will get the message.   

#2 – Heavily soiled rugs, especially due to animal urine deposits is kinda like a smorgasbord for moths. While you might not think it, urine is very attractive to moths. They feed on it because of the proteins. YUM!

#3 – Quiet, undisturbed areas of your home. We at Arizona Oriental know that rugs left in quiet rooms for extended periods as well as closets, storage areas such as under beds, garage and attics are much more likely to have damage from moths than high activity areas in your home. WHY? Because moths do not like us anymore than we like them. They look for dark, quiet spots where they can go undetected.
