Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here in Prescott AZ and I wanted to take today to discuss what proper area rug care actually looks like.
I know most people would never let their cars go years without proper maintenance - doing so causes the need for expensive repairs or just full-on replacement of your vehicle. Either way, it ends up costing you quite a bit of money.
Area rugs are the same way! They often get overlooked when it comes to the cleaning and maintenance of our homes, but trust me when I say that caring for them properly and regularly is just as important as caring for your car! Rugs live very harsh lives on our floors and they take quite a beating from the dry soil that builds up over time. Did you know that by caring for your rug the right way, you can extend its life by years and years?
Here are 5 things to remember when it comes to area rug maintenance:

Vacuum regularly! This helps to remove dry soil our rugs pick up daily. Dry soil is abrasive and grinds away at rug fibers when it’s allowed to get into the base of the rug.

Prevent permanent staining by blotting spots and spills ASAP. Use white towels or paper towels to dab up the spill gently, working from the outside of the spill towards the center. This prevents the spill from spreading and becoming a bigger stain!

Have your area rug professionally cleaned every 1-3 years at least. Regular vacuuming and spot cleaning are great, but there’s no substitute for a deep cleaning! If your rug is in an area with higher traffic, it should be cleaned more often to reflect that.

Address animal urine accidents as quickly as possible. Animal urine is acidic and can cause dry rot to rug fibers over time if left unaddressed. Dry rot weakens rug fibers and causes splits and holes in your beautiful rug. If your animals have more accidents on your rug, it should be professionally cleaned more often.

Have repairs taken care of as quickly as possible. Small damages to your rug’s fringe or side cords can quickly become HUGE problems as they continue to unravel over time. This leads to more extensive (and expensive) repairs!
