The Rug Experts Speak: What’s REALLY the Best Kind of Area Rug Padding?
Hi folks! Ruthie here with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care! I wanted to take a moment to talk to you all about area rug padding and what the differences between what you can get at your local big box store and what we here at Arizona Oriental in Prescott AZ carry.
Honestly, the only advantages to buying rug padding from a big box store is that it’s cheap. Which, if you aren’t too concerned with ruining your floors or your area rugs is a pretty good benefit.
You can choose the super cheap rug tape, which is just like it sounds - tape that you stick on the bottom of your rug that’s supposed to keep it in place on your floors… But who ever decided that TAPE was a good thing to put on your floors!? And putting it directly on your area rugs doesn’t seem like a good idea either...how are you ever supposed to get it off?
The other option you can get at box stores is this thin, rubber mesh-like padding that is pretty much what you might find at the bottom of your cabinets or drawers. This is another cheap option for rug padding and it actually covers the whole bottom of the rug, so you’d think that it’s a bit better at cushioning your rug against the floor than just the tape, right? Well, yes and no. The main issue with this kind of padding is that it’s so thin that it doesn’t really do much beyond keep your rug in place. While this is all well and good, it can also damage your floors and area rugs!
Imagine walking all over your rug for years on end while your rug has this thin rubbery mat beneath it. Eventually this mat will start degrading - between the area rug on top of it and the hard surface of your floor beneath it, the mat will either get stuck to the bottom of your rug or to your floors. It can be very difficult to remove in this instance and, really, it doesn’t do what rug padding is supposed to do.
