The Rug Experts Reveal the Secret to Proper Tufted Rug Care!

The Rug Experts Reveal the Secret to Proper Tufted Rug Care!

Hi folks!  Ruthie here with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care once again in Prescott, AZ.  Today I thought I would talk to you all about tufted area rugs, which a lot of people tend to get confused with hand woven rugs.  It may be because they read “wool” on the label and think that it’s a nice rug because hand woven rugs are also made of wool! However, tufted area rugs are constructed completely differently from a hand woven rug.

Instead of individually hand-tied knots holding the rug together, a tufted rug has wool face fibers that are looped into a mesh foundation.  A latex glue is applied to the backside of the rug to hold the loops in place and then a piece of monks cloth is laid on the back to make the rug look nice and hide all the messy glue.

I always tell my clients that frequent vacuuming is the key to keeping them cleaner in between professional cleanings with us at Arizona Oriental.

With tufted rugs, I do not recommend using an upright vacuum.  This is because the yarns can be easily pulled out of the mesh foundation if the suction is too powerful.  Instead, I would use a canister vacuum and turn off the rotary head feature if you’re able to. Vacuum your rug from side to side, going WITH (not against) the pile.

You can also use an upholstery tool from a canister or upright vacuum (so long as it doesn’t have a beater bar), again vacuuming WITH the pile.  An electric sweeper is also an excellent choice when it comes to tufted area rugs.

Tufted area rugs naturally have a looser pile density than woven (hand knotted) rugs.  Because of this, it’s easier for soil to settle deep down into the rug, so more professional cleanings may be necessary.  Again, vacuuming frequently allows you to capture and remove the dry particles before they work their way down into the base of the rug.

Unfortunately for tufted area rugs, their glue has a relatively short lifespan compared to the knots in hand knotted rugs.  It depends on the quality of the glue, but a tufted rug will need to be re-glued with a fresh piece of monks cloth backing after about 10 years.  If you start seeing a white powder on the floor beneath your rug, this is a strong indication that the glue is drying out.  Luckily, not only does Arizona Oriental provide area rug cleaning, we also offer tufted rug repairs and are more than happy to provide a quote to you!

Till next time, enjoy your beautiful art for your floor and remember a clean rug is a rug that can last you a lifetime!
