Hi folks! Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here in Prescott AZ and I thought I’d take some time today to answer a question that I tend to get pretty often. A lot of people worry that their rug is too damaged to be cleaned and the ragged, misshapen edges are too much for us to really be able to clean.
When it comes to damages, we always recommend that they be repaired as soon as possible to prevent more damages and costly repairs in the future. Depending on the severity of these damages, we may recommend that your rug is repaired, or at least secured, before we clean it. This helps to protect the loose, unravelling edges and allows us to clean the rug. Proper cleaning requires agitation and some rugs need to be secured so our agitation doesn’t worsen the problem.
For rugs that have damage, we always provide repair estimates to our clients. Securing is a good start in caring for your rug, it simply isn’t the same as a restorative repair that helps to preserve your rug for years to come. Restoration also helps preserve the value of your area rug as well. With damages, your rug simply doesn’t have much value. Also keep in mind that by having any damage repaired as soon as possible, you are minimizing the damages and the cost of repairs.
The long and short of it is this: Yes, your area rug can still be cleaned if it has ragged edges or damage to it. However, keep in mind there may be a need to have your rug at least secured before we can clean it so we can prevent your rug from unravelling completely.
