The Most Effective Way to Store Your Area Rugs – Sedona AZ

Whether you’re getting ready to move or putting your rugs away for the summer heat to enjoy your nice cool floors, you should be taking precautions when you store your rugs.  There are many reasons why someone might decide to store their rugs away and trust me when I say it makes a HUGE difference HOW you store your rugs.  Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here again and I wanted to take a few moments and discuss the DO’S and DON’TS of storing your area rugs.

Don’t make the mistake of rolling up your rug and shoving it under the bed or in the garage.  Moths are on the lookout for this exact scenario and I guarantee they would love to make your wool or silk area rug their home.  Moths look for two things when finding a place to lay their eggs – a food source (wool or silk) and a quiet, dark home where their wool-eating babies will be undisturbed.  Leaving your wool rug unprotected in the garage or under the bed is EXACTLY what moths are looking for!

The first step to storing your rugs is to have them professionally cleaned so that all the soil, spills, and any animal urine deposits are removed.  Protein-based spills just add to the delectable nature of your rug’s wool fibers to moths, so don’t give them even more of a reason to pick your rug!  After we clean your rug, we can treat it with a moth protectant to make the fibers take yucky and deter moths from ever nibbling on those wool fibers.

After your rug has been cleaned and protected, we will wrap your rug in a breathable wrap.  This wrap allows the wool to breathe and also keeps any unwanted critters (like moths and mice) away from your rug.  NEVER wrap rugs in plastic!  Wool naturally holds moisture and can’t breathe in plastic – this can create big problems for your rug’s foundation and face fibers with possible mold and mildew growth.

Rugs should always be rolled when you store them, NEVER folded!  We have seen a few rugs come out of an attic that had been folded for a long time that had severe fiber damage that was not correctable.  Folding can also stretch the foundation of the rug, leading to ripples that may cause your rug to never lay flat again.
