The Experts Reveal Their Secrets: How Often You SHOULD Have Your Area Rugs Cleaned- Prescott Valley AZ

Hi folks! It’s me, Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott, again and I know that the general rule is that wool does an excellent job at hiding a lot of soil.  Most wool rugs have a thick pile that allows soil to hide away from prying eyes by wiggling itself down to the base of the rug.  While vacuuming helps remove quite a bit of this dry soil, it’s true that vacuuming is no substitute for a deep, thorough, professional rug cleaning.

In general, Arizona Oriental suggests that wool rugs be cleaned every two to three years.

Of course, if there are animal urine/fecal accidents happening on your rug, you will need to have your rug cleaned more often.  It’s really important to have these spots professionally removed as soon as possible to avoid permanent fiber and foundation damage.

Traffic soil builds up over time on your rug as well.  If you notice that the area rug you have in a heavy traffic area of your home is starting to look dingy, your rug is telling you that it can’t handle much more soil buildup.  If you’re seeing traffic patterns in your area rug, it’s definitely time for a good cleaning!  However, our experience at Arizona Oriental has been that area rugs that have a heavy buildup of soil tend to not fully respond to a cleaning.  In these cases, it’s highly likely that permanent fiber damage has occurred.

When you see “soil” on your rug, this means your rug is experiencing dry soil microscopically grinding away at your rug fibers (just like sandpaper).  This does permanent and irreversible damage.

Rugs in high traffic areas may require more frequent annual cleanings.  In contrast, rugs in lower traffic areas like your guest room may require less cleaning and can likely go 3 years between cleanings.

Till next time, enjoy your beautiful art for your floor and remember a clean rug is a rug that can last you a lifetime!
