The Do’s and Don’ts of Selling Your Area Rug – Prescott Valley AZ
At Arizona Oriental, it is not uncommon for me to receive telephone calls where the individual on the other end wants to know if I buy used area rugs. Ruthie here and my Ruggies here at Arizona Oriental specialize in the cleaning and repair of area rugs, but not selling!
High quality area rugs like fine Persians or Orientals can last for many generations. This is usually good news but can also sometimes be bad news. It’s great to have a family heirloom for 20, 30, 40, and often 75 to 100 years. After all those years, however, the rug may not fit the lifestyle of the current owner. Maybe the color scheme or design no longer works in the home or perhaps the homeowner has downsized into a smaller home and suddenly the rug just doesn’t fit anywhere. Whatever the reason, the rug needs to find a new home.
My first suggestion once you have made the decision to part with your treasure is to have the rug professionally cleaned. This way the beautiful colors will pop instead of being covered up and hidden by soil. No one wants to buy someone else’s dirt and a clean rug will certainly show better.
Second, I don’t recommend you try to sell your rug yourself. The world is crazy these days, and inviting strangers into your home may not be the best idea. Not to mention that rugs are highly personal. The likelihood of someone coming over to look at your rug and wasting your time because “it’s not quite right” because of the fringe, pattern, color, or size is pretty high.
To my clients who want to sell their area rugs, I suggest they get in touch with a quality consignment store and let them do the work for them. Not only will you not have to deal with the work, but you’ll also be saved the uncertainty of inviting strangers into your home. Consignment stores have the distinctive advantage of having many people treasure hunting in and out of their establishment. This means the right buyer will come along and fall in love with your rug eventually!
