The Do’s and Don’ts of Rug Storage From the Rug Experts!
Hi folks! I’m Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here in Prescott AZ! Today I wanted to take a moment to talk to you all about the DO’S AND DON’TS OF AREA RUG STORAGE!
I know that not everyone wants to put their rugs away for a long period of time, but life happens and sometimes it becomes a necessity - maybe you’re moving to a smaller home and haven’t found a new place for your rug, or you’re switching out rugs between the seasons. Either way, you need to make sure you store your area rugs PROPERLY!
DON’T DO THINGS LIKE:
Fold your area rugs. Folding area rugs is NEVER A GOOD IDEA! Especially when it comes to long term storage! Folding puts extra stress on the fibers that doesn’t need to be there and can and will cause fibers to disappear.
Leave your rugs unprotected. Unprotected rugs (just rolled up and put into the garage or a storage unit) are the PERFECT home for moths, mice, and other critters that would just love to get their hands on your rug fibers!
Store a dirty rug. Rugs should ALWAYS BE STORED CLEAN. This way, there aren’t spills or urine proteins providing extra incentive for a moth to come in and lay its eggs where their larvae will get extra nutrition.
Store them in plastic! Plastic of any kind (whether a bag or saran wrap) does not allow the rug fibers to breathe. Moisture can get trapped in the rug and create mold and mildew issues.
These three things are major red flags, just ASKING for an area rug disaster!
HOW TO PROPERLY STORE YOUR AREA RUGS:
Have them cleaned by a professional like Arizona Oriental! We can remove not only the soil from your area rug (that maybe hasn’t been cleaned in years), but we can also treat any animal urine accidents that may have happened over the years. Animal urine is a HUGE problem, both in compromising your rug’s integrity and also attracting moths to the spots. Having your area rugs cleaned ensures that all of those problem spots and soils are removed!
Apply a moth-prevention treatment. Here at Arizona Oriental, we offer all of our clients a special Moth Treatment. This treatment is applied after the rug is cleaned and it causes the rug fibers to taste yucky to moths that try to make your rug their breeding ground and home. Not only does it work GREAT at preventing moths, but it is also WoolSafe and completely safe for kids and pets!
Have your rug rolled & wrapped in a storage wrap. This is a service that we can provide for you here at our facility - after we clean and apply our Moth Treatment to your area rug, we will then roll it nice and neatly and wrap it in a high quality storage wrap. This wrapping is designed to protect your rug from insects, animals, and soil, all while letting your area rug fibers BREATHE!
I hope this brief little summary of the proper (and not-so-proper) way to store area rugs was beneficial! If you have any questions or have an area rug that you need to put into storage for whatever reason, PLEASE GIVE ME A CALL! We are always more than happy to answer any questions for our clients.
Till next time, enjoy your beautiful art for your floor and remember a clean rug is a rug that can last you a lifetime!
