So what is a shag rug owner to do about rug maintenance?

First things first – you can’t really “vacuum” a shag rug.  But you CAN dust them with pretty good success.  With all your family members to assist you, take your rug to the back yard.  Flip the rug over and vigorously shake the rug until you are no longer seeing anything falling out of the rug.

By shaking your rug out frequently, you will stay on top of the dry soil.  This, of course, helps preserve your rug’s life in the long run.  Shaking your rug removes the dry soil before it works its way down into the depths of those thick fibers.  Since dry soil is abrasive, it grinds against fibers like sandpaper and makes the rug “ugly out” well before its time.

Next, run the hose of a small shop vacuum over the fibers.  Be careful that the suction isn’t too strong for these fibers – some shag fibers are more prone to coming out of the rug than others.
