Ruthie here with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott AZ once again! Today I wanted to take a moment to talk to everyone about rug padding and the differences between the good and bad rug padding.
Honestly, the only advantage to buying rug padding from a big box store is that it’s cheap. If you aren’t concerned with ruining your floors or your area rugs, it’s a pretty good benefit.
The cheapest choice for rug padding is rug tape. This is just what it sounds like - tape you stick on the bottom of your rug that’s supposed to keep it in place on your floors. But who decided TAPE was a good thing to put on your floors!? Putting it on your area rugs doesn’t seem like a very good idea, either - how are you supposed to get it off!?
The other cheap option you can get at box stores is thin, rubber mesh-like padding. You might find this at the bottom of your cabinets or drawers in your kitchen. It’s another cheap option for rug padding and is meant to cover the whole bottom of the rug, so you’d think it would be better at cushioning your rug on the floor rather than just the tape. The main issue with this kind of padding is that it’s so thin that it doesn’t actually do much beyond keep your rug in place. It can ALSO damage your floors and area rugs!
Eventually this mat starts degrading over the years of you walking on your rug. It’ll either get stuck to the bottom of your rug or to your floors and can be very difficult to remove. It doesn’t even really do what rug padding is SUPPOSED to do.
