It’s not uncommon when you adopt a new dog or cat that there is an adjustment period. A time when the animal is getting to know his surroundings and sometimes there is the occasional potty accident. Nothing strikes panic into the hearts of pet owners as when these accident happen on your fine area rugs. Calling a professional rug cleaning service such as Arizona Oriental Specialty Rug Care is always best, however there are steps you can take to help prevent permanent staining. If you act quickly the rate of success in your spotting efforts increases. Be patient when spotting as it is not uncommon to need to repeat the steps to achieve good results.
Before spotting it is very important that you test spot clean each of the procedures in an inconspicuous area.
It is also essential that you remove as much of the urine prior to spotting as possible. Start with a small stack of white paper towels or cotton cloths. Lay this on top of the urine spot. Now stand on the stack allowing the urine to wick up out of the rug fibers and into the towels. Remove, discard and replace with another dry stack of towels, again standing on the spot allowing more liquid to wick up. You should continue this step until no more urine is wicking up into the towels.
Now you are ready to start the spotting procedure. Mix a teaspoon of colorless dish soap with a cup of tepid water. Apply a light amount of this solution (distributing with your fingers works well). Blot up this solution starting at the outer edges of the stain working towards the center. (Tip: don’t rub – aggressive rubbing distorts the fibers)
Once above step is complete, mix an ammonia solution of ¼ cup of clean household ammonia to a cup of water. Again working in gently as in the previous step and blotting with care.
Using a vinegar solution of 1/3 cup of white vinegar to 2/3 cup of tepid water, once more apply using the vinegar solution to the spot starting at the outer edge and working towards the center.
Remember, you may need to repeat the above steps several times to before you see real results.
Once you have successfully removed all traces of pet urine it is then time to sprinkle with plain, tepid water over the spot and blot thoroughly.
Here at Arizona Oriental and Specialty Rug Care we specialize in urine treatment on area rugs. It is important to remember that all rugs should be professionally cleaned after a urine accident because urine salt crystals are very destructive to carpet fibers and cause dry rot, which in turn weakens the fibers. Weakened fibers are apt to split, tear or become holes over time.
