Should You Be Using a Powdered Deodorizer on Your Area Rugs?

Hi folks! Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here in Prescott AZ once again and I can tell you that we have just about seen it all when it comes to area rugs here in our shop.  I know that a lot of companies spend a lot of money on advertising to persuade consumers that their product is the best to solve their problems. Powdered deodorizing products are no different!

These are advertised as being something that will make the puppy pee smells magically disappear with just a little sprinkle of the product.  But keep in mind that the fresh smell will turn into the truth shortly - yucky urine and overly-sweet flowers!

The truth about these flowery-smelling products is that they do nothing to remove the source of the smell in your rug.  The best results that you can expect from these products is having them mask the odors for a short time.  But just like deodorant won’t completely fix body odor, powdered deodorizers won’t completely fix area rug odors.  THE SOURCE OF THE ODOR MUST BE REMOVED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM!

You should also keep in mind that the salt crystals from urine deposits are extremely damaging to all kinds of area rug fibers.  If they’re left unaddressed and allowed to remain in your rug, dry rot will occur and do some seriously devastating damage to your rug’s fibers.  Dry rot causes cracks, splits, and holes to the rug, thus ruining it.

But back to powdered deodorizers - they do not decontaminate your rug! Whatever the cause of the odor in your rug, the nasty bacteria and germs still remain in your rug.  Do you really want your family to be walking all over that?

Here at Arizona Oriental, we’ve seen more than a handful of fine area rugs that have a heavy build-up of this smelly powder.  In some cases, it has been so overused that it is extremely compacted deep down into the knots of the rug itself. It becomes very difficult to completely remove all of this deodorizing powder from rugs that have had this happen.  Please do your rug a favor and don’t overload it with smelly powders!

Don’t just mask a problem! Give Arizona Oriental a call
so we can assist you in correcting the problem!

Till next time, enjoy your beautiful art for your floor and remember a clean rug is a rug that can last you a lifetime!
