Should I Clean My Area Rugs Before Storing Them? – Prescott Valley AZ

The expanded answer is that Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care always instructs our clients to store only clean rugs. For starters, spots caused by organic substances like urine or food spills are harmful to delicate wool and silk area rug fibers. These substances have a higher pH than wool and silk and therefore can and will do fiber damage. The longer these spots stay on the fiber, the more likely it is that damage will occur.
Animal urine is especially damaging due to its very high pH. Not only will it do great harm to fibers but animal urine will also eventually cause dry rot. Dry rot will allow the foundation fibers to dry, break, and create a hole or split in the rug.
The longer that spots of food or other substances sit on your rug, the harder they will be to remove – it may even be impossible to remove all of the staining. The sooner the spot is cleaned, the better chance there is of complete stain removal.
Knowing that spots can cause permanent damage, it’s always best to have them removed as soon as possible. Bugs, rodents, and moths are also attracted to many spots such as urine and food spills because of the proteins they are made up of. Bugs and rodents think these spots are yummy and don’t just stop at eating the spots, they eat the rug fibers too!
