Sedona AZ – What Are the White Dots on My Hand Knotted Rug?

If you have an older hand knotted rug, chances are you’ve seen little white dots appearing on your rug’s surface.  These are extremely common and can be found in virtually every hand knotted rug, hidden in the pile or showing up on the surface of the rug.  So what are they and where did they come from?  I’m Ruthie at Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug in Prescott AZ and I’m hoping to shed a little light on that question for you.

White knots are part of your rug’s construction.  During the weaving process, cotton warp threads (which run vertical through your rug) and weft threads (which run horizontally, from side to side) are stretched over a loom to form the foundation of the rug and then weavers use this foundation to tie the face fibers to.  During the weaving process, it is not uncommon for some threads to break and need to be tied back together – It is where the weaver makes his repair that creates the white knots!

After the threads are tied back together, weaving continues and those white knots get sandwiched between the area rug’s face fibers and thus hidden.  Over time, as the rug ages, the pile wears down and so the knots become more visible.  This is just a natural part of your hand knotted rug’s aging process and, to many people, white knots are viewed as a sign of the rug’s beauty, character, and history.

Sometimes white knots aren’t visible until after you have your rug washed professionally by a service such as Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care.  This is because cleaning removes the soil that has been masking the white knots and suddenly, the clean knots are more noticeable.

Here at Arizona Oriental, we remind our clients to NEVER CUT OUT WHITE KNOTS!  Doing so will create a hole in the foundation of your rug, which will lead to unravelling and the loss of face fibers.  There are repair options available to you and we at Arizona Oriental would be happy to discuss these with you and provide you with a free estimate for cleaning and repair work.

Till next time, enjoy your beautiful art for your floor and remember a clean rug is a rug that can last you a lifetime!
