Hi folks!  Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here in Prescott, AZ and today I wanted to talk to you all about rugs that are made out of a natural fiber called Jute.

Jute can look quite nice when it’s made into a rug because it has a very natural feeling to it. I know that quite a few people have these in their homes because they add a nice rustic and natural look to their home.  Because jute rugs have grown a little more popular, more and more manufacturers are using it to make area rugs.

The major problem that I have with jute, however, is that no one took into consideration how these rugs were going to get cleaned.  Jute is infamous in the rug washing community for being nearly impossible to properly clean without serious issues. Because of this, we here at Arizona Oriental cannot clean them.

Here are just a few of the many problems that come from trying to clean jute area rugs:

• Becoming misshapen and rippling just from getting wet.

• Brown staining and watermarking that can be almost impossible to remove from jute

• Shrinkage

• Discoloring and appearing uneven

Despite the fact that jute is used in making twine and rope, it has a very weak structural integrity.  This means that it is more susceptible than other fibers are to experience shrinkage and rippling. It’s just a fact of a rug’s life that they will get dirty and need to be cleaned!

I always advise my clients to read the care instructions (if there are any) on your area rugs carefully. “Fancy fibers” like jute can have some very major care considerations with them.  Of course, if you have any questions about the care for your rugs, you are always more than welcome to give us at Arizona Oriental a call!
