Most of the tufted rugs we see coming through the shop have wool fibers on the front. Unfortunately, this is where people get mixed up between tufted rugs and hand-woven rugs.

Tufted rugs differ from other rugs because there are no knots in holding them together. Instead, you’ll find tufted rugs that have a mesh foundation where the wool fibers are looped, so they stay in place.
After making the rug, latex glue will be spread on the back of the rug. Next, a piece of canvas, or usually a monk’s cloth, will be glued to the back of the rug.
To clean, yarns can quickly come out of the rug when you do it that way. We don’t think you should use upright vacuums because they have a lot of suction power. A better choice is to use a canister vacuum and turn off the rotary head feature so that you can only use the suction. Also, clean from side to side.
There is less density in the pile of a tufted rug than there is in a hand-woven rug. You’ll find that this makes it easier for soil to get into the fibers of your rug. So, you might need to clean your rugs more often.
The dry particles won’t get to the bottom of the rug if you clean more often. Proper vacuuming is a big part of keeping your rug in decent shape between deep cleanings with us at Arizona Oriental.
