I love it when older, hand-knotted area rugs come into our shop. They’re such a joy to look at because every old rug has many tales to tell. One trait that shows up in about every hand-knotted rug is white knots.

What are white knots, and where do they come from?
White knots are part of the structure of hand-knotted rugs. When the foundation of a rug is built out, the cotton warp that which runs vertically, and weft, which run horizontally as the threads are stretched over the loom. Next, weavers tie face fibers to these threads.
It’s not uncommon for some of these strands to break through the weaving process, which needs the weaver to knot them back together. These repairs to the foundation strands cause white knots.
Through time and use, the rug’s pile gets worn down, and the knots sandwiched between the rug’s face strands become clearer. This is only a natural part of your hand-knotted rug’s aging process, and it adds a significant amount of character, beauty, and history to your rug! Some folks even refer to these white knots as “rug freckles.”
Rug Cleaner Explains What Not To Do With White Knots
These white knots can sometimes be covered by soil, so they don’t stand out much until you get your rug professionally cleaned. This cleaning removes the filth built up over the years, and suddenly the knots are much more apparent.
You should NEVER cut out white knots! Doing so produces a hole in the basis of your rug and consequently leads to a cascade reaction of unraveling and loss of face fibers.
