The response is a common yes for rugs with musty scents induced by animal urine incidents. However, cleaning alone may not be sufficient to remove the scents from rugs that smell like rubber or latex.
Unique tufted area rugs have rubbery scents. To make a tufted rug, a foundation cloth is used to force fibers through, and then latex glue is used to bind everything together.
A piece of monkscloth is nailed to the back to disguise the latex mess and make the rug an elegant appearance.
Rug scents might appear years after purchase or immediately after, depending on the quality of the glue used in its manufacture. Getting rid of rubbery odors is impossible, even with the help of a specialist in area rug cleaning.
Low-quality glue has a sticky latex stench that quickly smells up a place. This is not a smell you want emanating from a rug you cherish, and I get that. It’s just not pleasant.
Unfortunately, cleaning or deodorizing will not be able to remove these odors because of the construction of the rug. Arizona Oriental can remedy other odors, but glue-generated aromas cannot be remedied.
Our repair facility may remove the current backing, scrape away the old glue, and apply a fresh layer of higher-quality latex adhesive before laying a new piece of monkscloth over the back, depending on the rug’s age and the integrity of the backing.
Remove the old glue, even if it doesn’t eliminate the odors. Unfortunately, this is only a possibility if the rug’s backing has come loose and needs to be replaced right away.
