Prescott Rug Cleaner. What is Pooling On My Rugs?

Area rugs require and deserve professional cleaning to remove all dry soil, sweat, pet dander, pollen, and everything else life leaves behind.

Prescott Rug Cleaner. What is Pooling On My Rugs?

Hey there, folks! Ruthie, with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott, AZ.

Today I’d like to talk about pooling, which we find in a lot of the area rugs that come into Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care. Pooling is common in area rugs with a deep pile, such as Chinese rugs, although it can occur in any area rug, tufted or woven.

Expert Rug Cleaner in Prescott Explains Pooling

Pooling is a sort of pile reversal that makes it appear as if water has been spilled in some rug sections. A portion of the rug has gotten wet in these photographs! This isn’t the case; instead, the face threads of the area rug are being redirected.

While sticking straight up in the air, standard fibers will gradually wear down due to traffic and use. As a result, these fibers may alter orientation completely in some circumstances. For example, instead of standing upright or lying in a particular direction with the rest of the rug’s strands, they fold in on themselves and point completely differently.

These misdirected fibers reflect light differently, giving them a wet or mottled appearance. The images below show the same rug from two different perspectives, demonstrating how light reflects differently!

Pooling can occur in any area rug, even the most expensive and antique ones! No one knows why this happens to rugs, but it has been happening for hundreds of years! All carpets are subject to pooling, and no one fabric is more likely to pool than others.

Unfortunately, pooling damages the fibers of area rugs, and cleaning alone will not fix the problem.

That isn’t to mean that you shouldn’t clean your area rug! Depending on the level of activity in your home, all area rugs should be cleaned every 1-3 years.

Arizona Oriental in Prescott, Arizona, is here to assist you with all of your wool, silk, and synthetic area rug cleaning requirements!
