NEWS FLASH: Neglected Rugs Live Shorter Lives! – Prescott Valley AZ

Hi folks!  Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here in Prescott AZ.  I wanted to take a moment and talk about something that could be hurting your beloved area rugs – neglecting them!  When was the last time you had your area rug professionally cleaned?  When was the last time you ran a vacuum over it?  Or is there damage (like a hole or tear) that could really use some repairs?

Ignoring our area rugs and just leaving them to sit on our floors without any kind of maintenance does a lot more damage than most people think!  Without frequent vacuuming, dry soil builds up at the base of our rugs.  This dry soil grinds away at the delicate wool and silk fibers, causing fiber to break off and wear patterns to form.  This can lead to a threadbare rug, where the fibers have been worn away completely.

Any animal urine accidents that have happened and not been properly treated can also lead to dry rot.  Dry rot weakens rug fibers, which can lead to rips, cuts, tears, and holes in your precious area rugs.  Animal urine should ALWAYS be treated as quickly as possible to prevent serious damage.  Because urine has such high acidity, it does a lot of damage to the fibers.  Not only will it cause the dry rot I just mentioned, but it can also destabilize colors and lead to heavy color bleeding that may not be correctable.

Keep in mind that if your rug has a damaged side cord or a hole has shown up, this damage will only worsen over time!  Sometimes the fringe gets caught in the vacuum and the rug starts unravelling a little without the securing of the fringe.  Other times the puppy decides that your rug is a really great chew toy and he chews a hole right through the rug.  Whatever caused the damage, it’s REALLY important to have it addressed as soon as possible to prevent further damage from occurring!  The longer you wait to take care of repairs on your rug, the more unravelling will happen.  This means more extensive (and expensive!) repairs will be needed to secure or restore your rug.

So, if you want your area rug to last for years and years (like it has in the past if it’s a family heirloom), then you need to take care of it!  Make sure that it gets cleaned professionally every 1-3 years and have repairs taken care of as quickly as possible.  If there is animal urine accidents happening, those need to be cleaned and treated as soon as possible as well!
