Moth Infestation in an Area Rug – What to Watch Out For – Prescott Valley AZ

Hi folks!  Ruthie here with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott AZ and I wanted to share this video that our Ruggie, Kaitlyn, took of a rug that came into us recently just to show you what to be on the lookout for with your rugs.  This beautiful runner was in a back room of our client’s house that didn’t see much activity and, unfortunately, became a victim of moth infestation.

This rug was a memento that our client brought back with him from his time in the Middle East, so it holds a lot of sentimental value for him.  As you can see from the video, there is quite a bit of damage.  However, the true extent of the damage is not always known until we clean the rug.  Once the rug has been thoroughly washed, our repair shop will evaluate the rug and come up with a few options for repairs dependent on the client’s budget.

We at Arizona Oriental always warn our clients to take caution when storing their wool and silk area rugs.  You should NEVER store a dirty area rug or a rug that is unprotected.  We offer a preventative moth treatment on all of our client’s wool and silk area rugs to help protect rugs from moth infestation.  Moths LOVE dark, undisturbed areas (like under beds or in closets and garages) where they can lay their eggs and they won’t be bothered as they go through their life cycle.

For rugs going into storage, we also recommend having us wrap them in a breathable wrap for storage as an additional level of protection.  This will allow the wool fibers to breathe like they need to (unlike a plastic wrap), and will also protect the rug from outside forces like mice and moths.
