It’s me, Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care, once again! It’s always the most unexpected accidents that happen, well, when you least expect them! I can’t tell you how many times an accident has happened when I was in the middle of my busy day and it was just simply NOT a good time for that to happen. I don’t think there’s ever a good time for an accident to happen.
Here at Arizona Oriental, we recently had a client who had one of these very unfortunate and unexpected accidents. She brought her gorgeous rug to us with a big, BRIGHT YELLOW spot on it. Yikes!!! It may look like a highlighter exploded on her rug, but actually it was a supplement pill that had fallen out of her hand and opened up all over her gorgeous area rug.
The spot had begun pretty small, but her husband panicked in the moment and decided that the best thing to do was to quickly vacuum it up. Unfortunately, the brushes on the vacuum spread the powder around and ended up making the spot quite large!
What was the supplement behind this bright yellow spot, you ask? Turmeric! I’m told it’s great for arthritis, helping in the moderation of insulin, reducing cholesterol, and a whole bunch of other benefits. It’s great for all of these things, but it’s terrible for area rug fibers! Turmeric is a spice that comes from a root, which is very similar to what Native American weavers may have used to dye their wool yarns yellow.
My biggest tip for handling dry spills on area rugs? AVOID SPREADING THEM! Don’t use a beater bar vacuum or one that has brushes on it. Instead, I recommend using the nozzle hose of the vacuum or a shop vacuum. Without touching the rug, hover over the dry spill to let the suction to pull up the dry substance from the rug fibers. Then, once you’ve removed as much as possible, bring the rug into us at Arizona Oriental for the professional cleaning your rug needs to completely remove this spot!
