I’m Ruthie with Arizona Oriental and I’ll be the first to tell you that the unexpected accidents always happen when they’re just that – unexpected and the last thing we need in our busy days. Or at least that’s how it always happens to me and I can’t say there’s ever a good time for an accident to occur.
At Arizona Oriental, we recently had a client who unfortunately experienced one such accident. She brought her rug to us with a large, BRIGHT YELLOW spot on it. YIKES! A supplement pill fell out of her hand and opened up on her lovely area rug.
The yellow spot had started out fairly small but in the panic of the moment, her husband decided that the best thing to do was to quickly vacuum it up. Unfortunately, this caused the brushes of the vacuum to spread it around and what started out small ended up quite large!
Adding to this misfortune, the supplement was turmeric. I’m told it’s great for arthritis, helping to moderate insulin, reducing cholesterol, and a variety of other benefits. While it’s great for all this, it’s terrible for area rug fibers. Turmeric is a spice that comes from a root, much like Native American weavers may have used to dye their wool yarns yellow.
Arizona Oriental’s tip for handling dry spills is to avoid spreading them. Avoid using a beater bar vacuum. Instead, use the nozzle hose of the vacuum or a shop vacuum and, without actually touching the rug, hover over it to allow the suction to pull up the dry substance from the rug fibers. Once you have removed as much as possible, bring your rug into us at Arizona Oriental for the professional cleaning that your area rug will need.
