Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care always instructs our clients to store only clean rugs, never dirty rugs. First of all, spots that are caused by organic substances like urine or food spills are harmful to delicate area rug wool and silk fibers. They have a higher pH than wool and silk and, as such, can and will do fiber damage. The longer that these spots stay on the fiber, the more likely damage is to occur.
Not to mention how harmful animal urine is to rugs. It has a very high pH, which will do great harm to fibers and eventually cause dry rot. Dry rot literally allows the foundation fibers to dry, break, and create holes and splits in your rug.
When it comes to spots of food or other substances, it becomes more difficult and sometimes impossible to remove these kinds of spots the longer they set into the fibers.
As you can see, it’s important that you remove these spots as quickly as possible before they can cause permanent damage to your area rugs. Not only that, but bugs, rodents, and moths are all attracted to many of spots caused by urine and food because of the proteins they’re made up of.
At Arizona Oriental in Prescott AZ, we remind our clients that, in addition to cleaning, wool rugs should be treated with a moth treatment and properly wrapped in a breathable wrap (NEVER PLASTIC) prior to storing.
