Is There Any Hope in Removing Animal Stains from Area Rugs?

Hi folks, Ruthie here with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott AZ here once again!  I wanted to take a quick moment to talk about animal urine stains on your area rugs, as well as show you one of our videos of us cleaning a very soiled rug!

Can these stains be removed?  Is there any hope for the rug that your puppy has decided to do its business on? Yes and no.

The reason for this two-part answer is because of a couple of different things:

First, how long has the urine stain been on your rug?  If you haven’t had your rug professionally cleaned soon after the animal accident has occurred, then it’s likely that the stains may be permanent.  It doesn’t take a whole lot for a spot to become a stain, but animal urine is definitely one of the worst culprits when it comes to permanent staining!

Second, keep in mind that animal urine destabilizes area rugs!  Urine has a very high pH level that destabilizes dyes and weakens the fibers.  This weakening of fibers may cause dry rot in your rug, which is certainly not something you want to happen!  Destabilizing dyes can also cause color bleed in your rug that may not be removable.

For the most part, we are pretty successful when it comes to removing animal urine stains, however you should keep both of these things in mind when it comes to finding out that your rug has become victim to animal accidents.  The main one to keep in mind, however, if you want to avoid permanent staining on your area rug is to bring that rug to us here at Arizona Oriental as soon as possible for a thorough cleaning and urine treatment!  We can perform a treatment to help stabilize the dyes in your rug, as well as treat the urine spots themselves to get rid of any odors you may be detecting.
