How to Tell When Your Area Rug Needs to Be Cleaned – Prescott AZ
Hi folks! I’m Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care and it seems like just about everyone understands that wool fibers can hide a lot of soil. Most wool rugs have a thick pile that allows soil to wiggle its way down to the base of the rug, hiding away from any prying eyes. The truth is, however, while vacuuming does a great job at removing this dry soil, there’s just no substitute for a thorough, deep cleaning.
As a rule of thumb, Arizona Oriental suggests that wool rugs
be cleaned every two to three years.
There are exceptions to this rule of course. For instance, if your four-legged family members are having urine/fecal accidents on your rugs, then you will need to have them professionally cleaned more often. It’s really important to have animal urine spots professionally removed as soon as possible to avoid permanent damage to your rug’s foundation and fibers.
If you notice that the area rug located in the heavy traffic area of your home is starting to look dingy, your rug is telling you that it NEEDS to be cleaned. Seeing traffic patterns in your area rug is an indication that your rug can’t handle much more soil buildup! Unfortunately, our experience at Arizona Oriental has taught us that area rugs that are heavily soiled do not respond as well to cleaning efforts. In fact, it’s highly likely that permanent fiber damage has occurred in cases like these.
When you see “soil” on your rug, you’re seeing that the dry soil is microscopically grinding away at your rug fibers (just like sandpaper). This does permanent and irreversible damage.
Rugs in high traffic areas typically require more frequent annual cleanings. In contrast, rugs in lower traffic areas (like your guest room) can usually go 3 years between cleanings.
