Hi, it is Ruthie with Arizona Oriental. Quite a few consumers ask me if we can get rid of the odors in their area rug with an expert rug cleaning. The answer is usually yes for Prescott area rug cleaning to eliminate musty odors or those created by urine. However, if your rug smells like rubber or latex, area rug cleaning alone may not be enough to remove the odors.
Rubbery odors are exclusively associated with tufted area rugs.
This rug is created by punching loose wool tufts through a foundation cloth (as opposed to knotting the yarns individually). A coating of latex glue holds the rug together, and a piece of monkscloth is draped over the back to complete the effect. Depending on the quality of the adhesive used by the maker, odors can develop years after the rug was purchased or even shortly afterward.
Low-quality glue emits a rubbery latex odor that can quickly foul up an entire room. Certainly not a pleasant stench, and certainly not one you want emanating from a rug you enjoy having in your house!
Unfortunately, rug cleaning alone will not be enough to eliminate unpleasant odors.
The issue revolves around the rug’s manufacture. Other odors may be removed with ease by Arizona Oriental; however, odors created by the glue that holds the rug together are unfortunately unavoidable.
We may remove the present backing and scrape away the old, low-quality glue from older tufted rugs that are showing signs of backing detachment (pieces of it are lifting). The rug will then be cleansed, a new layer of higher-quality glue will be applied, and a new piece of monkscloth will be laid over the back. Getting rid of the old glue can help to reduce the number of doors - it won’t eliminate them, but it can assist a lot.
