How to Identify Moth Damage in Area Rugs – Sedona AZ

Ruthie here with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care!  Today I wanted to share a short video that Kaitlyn, one of the Ruggies here, shot of a rug that came into us recently with moth infestation.

The beautiful runner shown in this video was in a room at the back of our client’s house that didn’t see much activity.  Our client brought back this rug with him from his time in the Middle East, so it holds quite a bit of sentimental value to him.

As you can probably tell in the video, there is quite a bit of damage that the moths were able to do to the rug.  Unfortunately, the true extent of this damage is not always known until after we thoroughly clean the area rug.  This rug will be evaluated for available repair options after it has been cleaned and then will get repairs depending on the client’s budget.

Arizona Oriental always cautions our clients when it comes to storing their wool area rugs.  NEVER store a dirty, unprotected area rug.  Along with cleaning, we also offer a preventative moth treatment on all of our client’s wool and silk area rugs.  This preventative treatment helps to protect rugs from future moth infestation.  Dark, undisturbed areas (like under a bed or in a closet or garage) are a moth’s favorite places.  These areas provide a safe place for a moth to lay its eggs so they won’t be bothered during their life cycle.

We also recommend wrapping your rug in a breathable, protective wrap prior to storing your rugs.  Unlike a plastic wrap, this breathable wrap allows wool fibers to breathe while still being protected from outside moths and mice.
