Here in Arizona, there are so many beautiful places to go out and explore, but when we come home we track all the dust and dry soil we picked up outside. You can prevent a lot of damage to your area rugs by staying proactive about removing this dry soil from your rugs.
Flat weave rugs bear the brunt of damage from dry soil being ground into them. Their delicate fibers are damaged much more easily by abrasive dry soil than rugs with a thicker pile.
What is the best vacuum to use on a flat weave rug? I always recommend using a canister vacuum or an electric sweeper (from Bissell or Shark) for your flat weave area rugs. These provide enough suction to lift the dry soil from your rug, but are still gentle on their delicate fibers. NEVER use an upright vacuum with a beater bar! These are too aggressive for delicate flat weave rugs and will cause unnecessary damage.
Be careful to avoid the fringe and side cords of your rug when you vacuum across the width of the rug, moving from side to side. If your rug is on the smaller side and you want more control, you can use the upholstery tool or a soft brush attachment.
But remember, vacuuming alone is not enough to make your rug last years and years! To keep your rugs looking their best, you should have your rugs cleaned by a professional like Arizona Oriental every 1-3 years.
