As a general rule, wool does an excellent job at hiding a lot of soil. Most wool rugs have a thick pile which allows for the soil to wiggle down to the base of the rug where it easily hides out. Frequent vacuuming helps tremendously but is not a substitute for deep, thorough, proper cleaning.
Back to the question of how often wool rugs should be cleaned, the general rule of thumb is every two to three years. Of course this will vary depending of such circumstances as pet urine/fecal accidents or food spills, etc. These are spots that need to be professionally removed as soon as possible to avoid fiber and foundation damage. Another tip is to be aware of the traffic soil that builds up over the course of time. If your rug is in a heavy traffic area and you see that it’s looking dingy because of this traffic then the rug is telling you it can’t handle much more build up and it’s time to get it cleaned. From experience I will share with you that if a rug is neglected and soil build up is allowed to collect too much, the rug fibers have less of a chance of fully responding to a cleaning and you may wind up with permanent fiber damage. When you see “soil” what’s really happening is your rug is experiencing “dry soil” and dry soil is microscopically grinding away at the fibers (just like sandpaper) and doing permanent, irreversible damage. Rugs in high traffic areas may require annual cleanings. Rugs in low traffic areas such as a guest room require less cleaning and likely can go 3 years before you need to call Arizona Oriental for a professiona rug cleaning.
