How Often Should My Wool Rugs Be Cleaned? – Sedona AZ
The general rule is that wool does an excellent job at hiding a lot of soil. Most wool rugs have a thick pile that allows soil to hide away from prying eyes by wiggling itself down to the base of the rug. Vacuuming helps tremendously to remove this dry soil, but it’s no substitute for deep, thorough, and proper cleaning.
As a general rule of thumb, Arizona Oriental suggests that wool rugs be cleaned every two to three years. Of course, this will vary depending on circumstances such as pet urine/fecal accidents or food spills, etc. happening your rug. In these cases, these spots need to be professionally removed as soon as possible to avoid permanent fiber and foundation damage. Keep in mind the traffic soil that’s building up over the course of time on your rug as well. If your rug is in a heavy traffic area and you notice that it is beginning to look dingy because of this traffic, then your rug is telling you it can’t handle much more soil build up and it is time for a good cleaning!
Our experience at Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here in Prescott is that if soil is allowed to build up and collect too much, the rug fibers have a much lower chance of fully responding to a cleaning and may even have suffered from permanent fiber damage. What’s really happening when you see “soil” is your rug experiencing “dry soil” that is microscopically grinding away at your rug fibers (just like sandpaper) and doing permanent and irreversible damage.
Rugs in high traffic areas may require more frequent annual cleanings. In contrast, rugs in lower traffic areas like your guest room may require less cleaning and can likely go 3 years between cleanings.
