How Do You Clean a Rug for Storage? Prescott Rug Cleaner

Protect your rugs by storing them in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from natural light. Rugs should be stored in a climate-controlled self-storage unit because attics, garages, and basements tend to attract pests and cupboards lack ventilation.

However, you need to have them cleaned by a Prescott area rug cleaning expert before you place them in storage.

Hi there! It’s Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care coming from Prescott, AZ.

The long and short of it is that Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care always advises our clients to store only clean rugs. To begin with, spots caused by organic substances such as urine or food spills are damaging to delicate wool and silk area rug fibers. Because these substances have a higher pH than wool and silk, they can and will cause fiber damage. The longer these spots remain on the fiber, the more likely it is that damage will occur.

Because of its extremely high pH, animal urine is especially harmful. Animal urine will not only wreak havoc on fibers, but it will also eventually cause dry rot. The foundation fibers will dry, break, and create a hole or split in the rug as a result of dry rot.

The longer spots of food or other substances remain on your rug, the more difficult they will be to remove – it may even be impossible to remove all of the staining. The sooner the spot is cleaned, the better the chances of removing the stain completely.

Because spots can cause permanent damage, it is always best to have them removed as soon as possible. Bugs, rodents, and moths are also drawn to many spots, including urine and food spills, due to the proteins they contain. Bugs and rodents find these spots delicious and not only eat the spots, but also the rug fibers!
