Helpful Tips for At-Home Area Rug Cleaning – Prescott Valley AZ

Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott AZ here and I wanted to take a moment to share some rug cleaning tips with you.  Hopefully this will help prevent any area rug disasters and prevent you from needing to replace your rug.

I always make sure I have the three things listed below on hand to help with area rug cleaning in between having my area rugs professionally cleaned.

1. Paper towels.  When a drink spills on your area rug, it’s important to take prompt action in removing the extra fluid from your rug.  Time is of the essence here and the longer you wait to extract it, the greater the odds of that liquid seeping deeper into your rug.  This makes for a tougher clean up and also can create permanent staining.  Paper towels are GREAT at absorbing excess fluid!
2. Baby wipes.  These help in removing fresh stains on your area rug.  Remember, never rub a stain!  This will not only spread the stain around, but it will also force the stain further into the rug fibers.  Baby wipes can help to remove the color of the stain and help prevent it from causing further staining elsewhere in the rug.  This is a good thing to use if you ever have ink spill onto your area rug.
3. White vinegar.  Not only a popular kitchen ingredient, it also has a lot of uses in helping handle food and drink staining.  A teaspoon of white vinegar mixed with a cup of warm water can create a highly effective cleaning mixture.  Use your fingertips to gently apply the solution to the stain on your rug and then blot it with paper towels.  Remember to work from the outside of the stain toward the center to avoid spreading it elsewhere.
