I’m Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott AZ and I wanted to take a quick moment today to share some photos of a rug that came into our shop recently.  This little hook rug with a black lab REALLY captured my heart - I personally love black labs and the owner of this rug does as well!

Unfortunately, this rug is what’s known as a tufted rug and was also quite old.  My client has had this rug for many years and they’ve really loved it. The backing had some serious issues that needed to be taken care of in order for our client to be able to enjoy the rug for even more years to come.

Tufted rugs are different from hand knotted rugs in that they have a mesh foundation the wool tufts get punched through in the desired pattern.  Once the rug is complete, they layer latex glue over the back to hold everything together and put a piece of monkscloth or canvas over the glue.

Unfortunately, these rugs aren’t made to last forever and typically only have a lifespan of about 10 years.  The latex glue starts breaking down after this time and the backing starts to lift up and fall off, as shown in the photos here.

                                                     

Here at Arizona Oriental, we are able to provide this rug with a fresh layer of latex glue and a nice new piece of fabric on the back.  This restores the rug and gives it a brand new life again.  I know how difficult it can be to replace a rug you’ve had for years, especially when it’s one you love as much as this client loves their little black lab rug!
