Handy Tips from Ruthie, the Rug Pro, for Storing Your Area Rugs-- Prescott Valley AZ
Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here again to take a few moments to discuss the DO’s and DON’TS of storing your area rugs. Whether you’re getting ready to move or putting your rugs away for the summer heat to enjoy your nice cool floors, you need to be taking precautions when you store your rugs. There are many reasons why you might decide to store their rugs away and trust me when I say it makes a HUGE difference HOW you store your rugs.
Area rugs are not like posters! Don’t make the mistake of rolling up your rug and shoving it under the bed or in the garage. Wool moths are on the lookout for a “forever” home for their offspring and themselves. They look for two things when finding a place to lay their eggs – a food source (wool or silk) and a quiet, dark home where their wool-eating babies will be undisturbed. You would not believe the amount of damage these very small, invasive creatures do in a very short amount of time! Leaving your wool rug unprotected in the garage or under the bed is like ringing a dinner bell for these moths!
When you need to store your rugs, call Arizona Oriental and
we will help you preserve them!
The first step to storing your rugs is to have them professionally cleaned so that we can remove all the soil, spills, and any animal urine deposits. Protein-based spills just add to the delectable nature of your rug’s wool fibers to moths, so don’t give them even more of a reason to pick your rug! After we clean your rug, we can treat it with a moth protectant to make the fibers taste awful and deter moths from ever nibbling on those wool fibers.
After we clean and protect your area rug, we will wrap it in a breathable wrap. This wrap allows the wool to breathe and also keeps any unwanted critters (like moths and mice) away from your rug. NEVER wrap rugs in plastic! Wool naturally holds moisture and can’t breathe in plastic – this can create big problems for your rug’s foundation and face fibers with possible mold and mildew growth. Which would create an entirely different set of problems!
Rugs should always be rolled when you store them, NEVER folded! We have seen rugs that have come out of an attic that had been folded for a long time that had severe fiber damage that was not fixable therefore it was ruined, all because you folded your rug! Folding can also stretch the foundation of the rug, leading to ripples that may cause your rug to never lay flat again. What will you do with a rug that does not lay flat?
