Getting Smart With Buying Used Area Rugs: What to Look Out For - Prescott Valley AZ

Getting Smart With Buying Used Area Rugs: What to Look Out For - Prescott Valley AZ

Ruthie here with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care and I know that finding a used rug that will work great in our homes for a great deal is always a wonderful treat.  However, I would urge all of my clients to be wary when it comes to purchasing a used area rug.  Why?  Sometimes we don’t notice everything wrong with a rug until we get it home...and then we’re in trouble!

So what should you keep your eye out for when you buy a used area rug?

  1. Odors.  Perhaps the previous owner of the rug was a smoker and the rug absorbed pretty heavy cigarette odors.  This can take extensive deodorizing to try to remove.  Or maybe there were multiple animal accidents on the rug and urine odors are the issue.  Urine deposits require the rug to be thoroughly flushed and treated to remove the deposits and odors.
  2. Bugs, specifically moths.  There is a good chance that a wool or silk rug may have a moth infestation if it was stored unprotected in the garage or under a bed.  This too needs to be treated before the rug can be cleaned.  A rug could also be host to bed bugs or carpet beetles that you certainly don’t want in your home either!
  3. Deteriorating latex on a tufted rug.  Most tufted area rugs have an average lifespan of about 10 years before the latex holding the rug together begins to break down. When latex breaks down, it can create a powdering effect where the latex is falling out of the rug and leaving imprints of fine powder on your floor.  The backing may even be falling off and require replacement.  There can also be a heavy latex or rubber odor coming from the rug that you may not notice until you get it home.  Latex odors are not correctable most of the time.

It’s always a good idea to have Arizona Oriental clean your new-to-you area rug before you bring it into your home.  I know that it feels good when you find a great rug at a great bargain, but don’t let the cheap price on a lovely wool or silk area rug fool you into buying something that has more problems than what it’s worth to you!
