Hi folks! Ruthie here with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here in Prescott AZ!  Today I wanted to share a short video that we shot of a rug that came into us recently with a heavy moth infestation.

This gorgeous runner was kept in a room at the back of our client’s house and didn’t see a whole lot of activity.  It holds quite a bit of sentimental value to him since he brought it back with him from his time in the Middle East, so he was anxious to get his rug taken care of properly.

As you can tell in the video, there is a LOT of damage that the moths were able to do to the rug.  Unfortunately, until we clean the rug thoroughly, it’s hard to tell what the true extent of the damage is.  Once the rug is cleaned, then we will evaluate it for available repair options and go from there depending on the client’s budget.

We at Arizona Oriental always caution our clients when it comes to storing their wool area rugs or keeping them in places that don’t see much activity.  Keep in mind that dark, undisturbed areas (under a bed, in a closet, or in the garage) are a moth’s favorite places.  You should NEVER store a dirty and unprotected area rug! Here at our facility, we of course provide a thorough cleaning, but we also offer a preventative moth treatment on all of our client’s wool and silk area rugs.  This treatment helps to protect your rugs from future moth infestations. 

If you are looking to store your area rugs, we also recommend wrapping your rug in a breathable, protective wrap prior to doing so.  Plastic wrap does not allow your rug’s fibers to breathe while being protected from outside moths and mice, but our breathable wrapping does.
